LANDFILL LABORER
Public Works / Salina Municipal Landfill
The Landfill Laborer plays a vital role in environmental compliance to isolate waste in protecting citizens from pollution & health risks. This position operates light to medium equipment, perform essential maintenance, & helps manage the disposal of waste while preventing hazardous materials from entering the landfill. This hands-on role involves working outdoors, conducting repairs, & keeping landfill operations safe & efficient.

On-the-Job Training: Experienced staff will guide our new Landfill Laborer in operating various equipment such as compactors, front-end loaders, & self-propelled scrapers, ensuring hands-on learning in waste processing operations. Mentorship includes practical experience in maintenance tasks, equipment servicing, & safety procedures, which prepares our new Landfill Laborer for a long-term career in public works.
Duties:
· Performs skilled & semi-skilled manual labor in the maintenance & operation of the Salina municipal solid waste landfill.
· Operates pickups, mowers, litter picker & other light to medium equipment at the municipal solid waste landfill & in various assignments.
· Trains in the operation of compactors, front-end loaders, & self-propelled scrapers.
· Trains & assists with the handling of waste processing operations.
· Looks for & prevents hazardous waste from entering the landfill; extinguishes fires at landfill.
· Welds, services & makes repairs to equipment; performs maintenance checks on equipment.
· Maintains landfill roads; fixes fence; mows grounds; cleans & maintains buildings; picks up litter & debris.
· Prepares minimal records of own activities.
Education: High school diploma or G.E.D.
Experience:
· One (1) year of construction work operating light & medium equipment.
· Horizontal & vertical land construction work desired.
Related Work: Construction laborer; fence construction; fire suppression & prevention; front-end loader operation moving heavy material; hazardous waste removal work; highway & road maintenance; hydraulic, irrigation, large truck, diesel & heavy equipment repair; welding; work using self-propelled scrapers, & equipment in moving, pushing & pulling large quantities of dirt or rock.
Requirements:
· Must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license at hire.
· Valid Kansas commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brake endorsement & tanker endorsement is desired but not required.
The City of Salina may pay enrollment fees & pay hourly wages for well-performing employees to attend CDL training at Salina Area Technical College.
Work Type:
· Heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
· Works outside in varying weather conditions.
Machines, Tools, & Equipment: Earth scrapers, front-end loaders, litter pickers, mowers, pickups, road sweepers, trash compactors, mechanic’s hand & power tools, self-propelled scrapers, tractor mower, weed-eaters, welder, etc.
Hours:
· Monday-Thursday, 6:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. OR
· Tuesday–Friday, 6:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Starting Pay DOQ:
· $19.73-20.72/hr.
· $41,038-43,098/yr.
· Additional $1.50/hour paid for hours worked after 6:00 p.m. & before 6:00 a.m.
Paid Time Off:
· 48 hours of vacation available upon hire; additional 48 hours earned during the year (96 hours in first year).
· 96 hours of sick leave during first year.
