LANDFILL LABORER
Salina Municipal Landfill
Position Objective: Environmental compliance to isolate waste to protect citizens from pollution & health risks.
Career Advancement: Landfill Operator I, Landfill Operator II.
On the job training: Learn to operate medium / heavy equipment & to participate in federal & state regulated landfill practices in the disposal of solid waste.
Duties: Performs skilled & semi-skilled manual labor in the maintenance & operation of the City of Salina’s municipal solid waste landfill; maintains landfill roads by conducting minor asphalt patching & operating a road sweeper; fixes fences; mows grounds; cleans & maintains buildings; picks up litter & debris; extinguishes fires; performs service & maintenance to equipment; welds & makes repairs to equipment; after training this position levels, moves, compacts & covers solid waste; assists filling cells where waste is dumped & compacted; works to minimize the possibility of wastes escaping to groundwater beneath the landfill; looks for & prevents hazardous waste from entering into landfill.
Equipment: Light to medium equipment such pickups, mowers, weed eaters, hand power tools, welder, litter pickers, road sweepers, etc.; heavy equipment training to include compactors, bulldozers, motor graders, front-end loaders, & self-propelled scrapers.
Education: High school diploma or G.E.D.
Experience: One (1) year of construction work operating light & medium equipment; horizontal & vertical land construction work desired.
Related Work: Construction laborer; fence construction; highway & road maintenance; work using self-propelled scrapers, bulldozers & equipment in moving, pushing & pulling large quantities of dirt or rock; front-end loader operation moving heavy material; fire suppression & prevention; hazardous waste removal work; welding; hydraulic, irrigation, large truck, diesel & heavy equipment repair work.
Requirements: Must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license at hire; valid Kansas commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brake endorsement & tanker endorsement is desired but not required. The City of Salina will pay enrollment fees & pay hourly wages for employees to attend CDL training at Salina Area Technical College.
Work Type: Heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Hours: Monday-Thursday, 6:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. or Tuesday–Friday, 6:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Starting pay: $18.97-19.92/hr. DOQ
