SUMMER CAMP

RECREATION ASSISTANT I
(16 years of age or older)
This classification is the entry level of the recreation series working under immediate supervision.

Duties:
· Provides leadership & guidance to all participants through a variety of games, crafts, sports, hiking, & camping activities.
· Meets & greets participants & provides information about programs.
· Responsible for overseeing activities & monitoring participants.
· Assists with the supervision of individual programs, team sports, & activities.
· Explains the rules of the activities & instructs participants at a variety of skill levels.
· Supervises participants & activities at all times.
· Guides participants to partake in all activities.
· Provides positive reinforcement or other behavioral intervention, as needed.
· Facilitates social interaction among all participants.
· Provides individual assistance as needed to promote participants' general adjustment to camp and/or activities.
· Provides personal care for participants.
· Rides as passenger in the designated vehicle for pick-up & drop-off, providing extra support & supervision for participants.
· Sets-up activities & cleans after activities.
· Ensures that the right equipment & supplies are on hand for all activities.
· Oversees equipment & makes sure equipment functions properly.
· Organizes & stores supplies & equipment.
· Responsible for miscellaneous office duties.
· Administers basic first aid, if needed.
· Responds in emergency situations within scope of training.
· Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education:
· Eighth grade graduate.
· CPR & First Aid certifications required.

Experience:
· Previous work in a school or camp setting preferred.

Desired Qualifications:
· Must be able to follow instructions.
· Maintains a high standard of customer service.
· Maintains positive & cooperative working relationships.
· Communicates well with staff & patrons of various ages from diverse backgrounds.
· Demonstrates kindness to staff & patrons & presents professional attitude at all times.
· Must be able to communicate verbally & in writing.

Requirements:
· Sixteen (16) year olds will work in a non-driving capacity.
· Seventeen (17) year olds must possess a valid driver's license to operate utility vehicles & golf carts on city property & non-public access passageways.
· Performs all job tasks according to rules & guidelines of Salina Parks & Recreations' safety program & weather alert procedures.
· Must have reliable transportation to-and-from work.
· Must be available to work shifts.
· Must attend required trainings & meetings.
· Required to review posted event calendars.
· Must follow scheduling protocols & be able to obtain weekly work schedule.
· Must follow time & attendance guidelines; must adhere to payroll requirements.
· Must respond in a timely manner to all forms of communication regarding City of Salina employment by way of phone calls, emails, texts, etc.
· Must be able to lift 10-40 pounds frequently.

Pay:
$12.73-14.73/hr. DOQ

 

RECREATION ASSISTANT II
(18 years of age or older)
This classification is mid-level in the recreation series working under general supervision.

Duties:
· Responsible to fulfill the duties of the Recreation Assistant I position, as needed.
· Drives to & from events in the absence of the Recreation Assistant III.
· Provides leadership & guidance to all participants through a variety of games, crafts, sports, hiking, & camping activities.
· Meets & greets participants & provides information about programs.
· Responsible for overseeing activities & monitoring participants.

· Supervisory experience preferred.

· Performs all job tasks according to rules & guidelines of Salina Parks & Recreations' safety program & weather alert procedures.

RECREATION ASSISTANT III
(18 years of age or older)
This classification is the highest level in the recreation series working under general supervision.

Duties:
· Supervises volunteers & Recreation Assistant I & II staff in the absence of the Recreation Supervisor.
· Works in coordination with the Recreation Supervisor to develop Fieldhouse Summer Camp's program.
· Coordinates with Recreation Supervisor to hire, train, mentor & supervise camp staff.
· Plans, schedules & attends activities & programs for a 9 week summer camp for children 6-11 years of age.
· Ensures efficient scheduling to maintain required staff/child ratios.
· Coordinates special events & field trips.
· Organizes weekly lesson plans.
· Assists with staff evaluations & trainings.
· Ensures that the physical facilities are safe & that supervision is adequate.
· Schedules & documents regular staff meetings, if needed.
· Administers basic first aid, if needed.
· Responds in emergency situations within scope of training.
· Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education:
· High school diploma or G.E.D.
· Bachelor's degree in Pre-School and/or Elementary Education preferred.
· Training and/or courses in elementary education or early childhood development, desired.
· CPR & First Aid certifications required. 

Advanced Preparation:
· Meets with Recreation Supervisor to review & refine lesson plans.
· 9 week lesson plan will be required.

Experience:
· Employed for two (2) years in Recreation Assistant II position or demonstrated experience and/or skills to advance to Recreation Assistant III.
· Three (3) years working with youth.
· Supervisory experience required.
· Advanced work with youth is highly desirable.

Hours: 
· Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for 9 weeks during the summer.
