The Museum Assistant is a community-facing role that anchors daily museum operations, welcoming visitors at the greeter desk & supporting a safe, engaging gallery experience. By orienting guests, answering questions, & assisting with exhibit preparation & educational programs, the position actively preserves & shares local heritage that benefits residents & visitors across the community. On-the-Job Training: Experienced museum staff provide hands on training that begins with shadowing at the greeter desk & progresses to independent visitor orientation, gallery security, & public-facing service. Training includes step by step coaching in Museum Store operations—cash handling, inventory, & merchandising—along with clerical workflows such as phones, filing, & record preparation, reinforced through practice & feedback. Cross training covers exhibit preparation, basic curatorial support, & set up/clean up for tours & educational programs. Routine coaching emphasizes situational awareness, customer service standards, & adherence to safety & confidentiality practices common to City of Salina operations.
Duties:
· Performs a wide variety of basic museum duties.
· Opens & closes museum building & museum store; runs the cash register & gift shop; manages inventory & merchandising.
· Provides gallery & building security.
· Works with public frequently, welcomes visitors to the museum & provides visitor orientation.
· Works at greeter desk; performs receptionist & general clerical duties.
· Answers telephones, performs clerical & secretarial duties; types accurately at or above 40 words per minutes.
· Answers basic historical questions about Salina & Kansas; answers general questions and/or directs inquiries to appropriate staff.
· Distributes brochures & materials; restocks exhibit areas.
· Assists staff with educational programs, basic curatorial duties, & exhibit preparations.
· Assists with tour/program staging, preparations, conducting, & clean-up.
· Performs general museum cleaning.
Education:
· High school diploma or G.E.D.
Experience:
· Previous work experience in customer service, cashiering, reception work, entry level catering and/or event planning & implementation.
· Experience and/or interest in history & community programs.
· Knowledge of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, & Access.
Requirements:
· Must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license.
Work Type:
· Light, exerting up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
· Frequent walking; inside work.
Equipment:
· Adding machine, calculator, computer, copy machine, fax machine, & telephone.
Hours:
· Works varied hours during the week as needed.
· Weekend shift: Saturday 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. as needed.
Starting Pay DOQ:
· $17.05-17.90/hr.
