The Traffic Controls Technician plays an essential role in ensuring the efficient operation of traffic systems, reflecting the city's steadfast dedication to safety & streamlined traffic flow. Beyond traffic management, this role focuses on enhancing safety & connectivity within Salina. The technician is involved in installing & maintaining a wide range of traffic control devices, transformers, & electronic control equipment, demonstrating technical expertise. Further responsibilities include responding to operational challenges & troubleshooting to provide innovative solutions to traffic management issues.

Duties:
· Assists in the construction, installation, troubleshooting, maintenance & the repair of traffic control & signal systems, including setting posts, poles & signs, painting markings & signs, installing & repairing signal heads, controllers, telemetry systems, video equipment, microprocessors, photoelectric systems & related equipment.
· Installs traffic control signs; inventories damaged signs; locates underground traffic control conduits for signals & other electrical devices.
· Locates ground trouble in traffic signal systems; investigates complaints of malfunctioning traffic control devices & other electrical equipment as assigned.
· Inspects signals, replaces burned-out lamps, broken cover plates, signs, & reflectors; welds; performs decorative lights maintenance; paints crosswalks, curbs & symbols.
· Locates underground traffic control conduits for signals & other electrical devices.
· Operates light & medium equipment & trucks; uses equipment & materials requiring minimal servicing.
· Acts as a lead worker when helpers are assigned.
· Prepares records of activities.
· Aids in emergency & storm related activities, removes snow, works on flood levee & places barricades; assists other sections or departments as needed.
Education & Certifications:
· High school diploma or G.E.D.
· College-level course work or vocational training in electronic work is desirable.
· Journeyman electrical license preferred.
· Must attain IMSA Work Zone Safety, Traffic Signals Level I, Field Technician II, & Inspector certifications within twenty-four (24) months from employment start date.
Experience:
· Two (2) years of experience in related work.
Requirements:
· Must live within 40 minutes’ drive time.
· Must possess valid Kansas driver’s license at hire.
· Must possess a valid Kansas CDL Class B driver’s license with air brakes endorsement or obtain within one (1) year from employment start date.
The City of Salina will pay enrollment fees & pay hourly wages for employees to attend Class B CDL training at Salina Area Technical College.
Work Type:
· Very heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Equipment:
· Bucket lifts, calculator, multimeter, Ohm meter, pencils, screw drivers, small hand tools, telephone, test bench equipment, vehicles, & wrenches.
Hours:
· Monday – Friday.
· 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
· Covers standby shifts/after-hours calls as needed.
Pay DOQ EOE:
· $21.76 -22.85/hr.
· $45,247-47,528/yr.
· Additional $1.50/hour paid for hours worked after 6:00 p.m. & before 6:00 a.m.
Paid Time Off:
· 48 hours of vacation available upon hire; additional 48 hours earned during the year (96 hours in first year).
· 96 hours of sick leave during first year.
