The Recreation Assistant II position at the Salina Municipal Golf Course is an exciting opportunity to make a significant impact on Salina's youth by fostering both their personal & athletic growth. As an integral part of the Parks & Recreation Department, this role supports the First Tee program, teaching essential life skills framed around the game of golf, which can be both challenging & rewarding. This position embodies the core values of honesty, integrity, respect, & sportsmanship, thereby strengthening the community fabric of Salina. Engaging in various outreach programs & events, the role enlivens the local initiatives by making golf & its values accessible & enjoyable for young participants. By maintaining a high standard of service & nurturing a positive environment, this position is pivotal in crafting a wholesome & supportive community atmosphere.

On-the-Job Training: Training is led by seasoned Parks & Recreation staff. The training program is designed to immerse new Recreation Assistants in both activities & individual responsibilities, enhancing their adaptability & proficiency. This hands-on experience is crucial as it equips our assistants with skills transferable across various roles within the community. Beyond immediate responsibilities, the training emphasizes the importance of core values & community involvement, encouraging fulfilling part-time employment.

This classification is mid-level in the recreation series working under general supervision.

Duties:
· Must understand the game of golf, rules & etiquette.
· Helps the First Tee Director in the organization & implementation of the First Tee program.
· Works with staff to coach participants through First Tee Golf & Life Skills Experience Lesson Plans using the First Tee Coach Building Blocks.
· Models The First Tee's 9 Core Values: Honesty, integrity, respect, confidence, responsibility, judgement, courtesy, perseverance, & sportsmanship.
· Assists with outreach programs.
· Ensures that classes are set up according to lesson plans.
· Prepares supplies & facility before & after lessons.
· Makes the game fun for youth participants.
· Ensures that participants are picked up by a parent/guardian after lessons.
· Maintains the cleanliness & quality of equipment.
· Maintains & organizes all equipment storage areas.
· Takes initiative & assists with additional work at the Golf Course.
· Participates in required academies, regional & annual meetings, orientations, & trainings.
· Attend periodic coach trainings at chapter.
· Administers basic first aid, if needed.
· Responds in emergency situations within scope of training.
· Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education:
· High school graduate or G.E.D.
· College degree preferred.
· CPR & First Aid certifications desired.

Experience:
· Prior work in Parks & Recreation in the Recreation Assistant I position or related work preferred.
· Experience in youth development.
· Coaching or working with youth ages 5-17.
· Experience as a credentialed school educator preferred.
· Golfing experience preferred.

· Must have excellent problem-solving skills & demonstrate good judgement when completing job duties.

· Maintains positive & cooperative working relationships.
· Works indoors/outdoors in changing environmental conditions; must be able to work in temperatures which often exceeds 90 degrees.
· Communicates well with patrons of various ages from diverse backgrounds.
· Demonstrates kindness to patrons & presents professional attitude at all times.
· Must be able to communicate verbally & in writing.

Requirements:
· Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older.
· This is a driving positon. Must possess a valid driver's license.
· Performs all job tasks according to rules & guidelines of Salina Parks & Recreations' safety program & weather alert procedures.
· Must have reliable transportation to-and-from work.
· Must be available to work shifts.
· Must attend required trainings & meetings.
· Required to review posted event calendars.
· Must follow scheduling protocols & be able to obtain weekly work schedule.
· Must follow time & attendance guidelines must adhere to payroll requirements.
· Must respond in a timely manner to all forms of communication regarding City of Salina employment by way of phone calls, emails, texts, etc.
· Must be able to lift 10-40 pounds frequently.
· Must pass background checks.

Hours:
· Flexible schedule; 10 to 15 hours/week; mornings and/or afternoon shifts available.
· Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; 40 hours/week available.
· May include weekends based on golf course programs.
· Must be able to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays (i.e., Memorial Weekend, Fourth of July, Labor Day Weekend) & special events (i.e., Smoky Hill River Festival, private parties).

Pay DOQ EOE:
· $8.75-$10.50/hr.
